QLD Title excitement plus
Monday June 9, 2008
The
final race of the season arrived, that being the QLD Modified
Production Title at Maryborough Speedway over the June long weekend
(7th & 8th). With action aplenty and the racing fast and
furious as ever, Shane Macdonald was back to have another crack at a
title and so were 59 other entrants.
The weekend not
starting out too well for Macdonald, as heat one resulted in Shane
having a flat tyre. Not the start the team would have liked
but Shane just put that behind him went out for heat two.
Starting from 4th
position, Macdonald saw an opening and squeezed between Gary Brown
and Shane Dennis in the first corner to take the lead. Dale
Grother followed through and challenged Macdonald all the way.
Macdonald crossing the line in first with Grother second and Shane
Dennis third.
Heat three was a
thriller with Macdonald starting back in 7th, Shane moved forward
running in 5th behind Darryl Etherden. Macdonald went up high
and moved around the outside of Etherden and Steve Thomsen to snare
third place. Gavin Fletcher took the heat win with Glen Pagel
2nd in his brands new VS Commodore and Macdonald finishing in third
place.
After night one, the
car hardly had a scratch on it, a few slight improvements to the
power steering was all that was on the agenda before night two.
After three heats,
Macdonald was tied on points with Gavin Fletcher and Rodney
Pammenter in 15th place. A front row start for his final heat
and Macdonald jumped into lead, stretching out to a 10 car length
lead until half way through the 12 lap heat the yellow lights come
on as Shane Dennis and Ashley Barron come together.
Macdonald lead the
field away with Gavin Fletcher in 2nd. Fletcher made a pass up
the inside of Macdonald to take the lead, Macdonald trailing
Fletcher all the way to finish in 2nd place and Travis Hutchinson
3rd.
With another second
placing this bolstered Macdonald into 12th place for the feature
race.
The feature race got
underway, Macdonald having a keen eye for any trouble up ahead, as
the key to the opening laps is staying out of trouble.
Macdonald settled himself into 10th place behind Greg Worling.
30 laps to go and Greg Raymont went into the wall and Greg Worling
having nowhere to go collecting Raymont, both car retired with
suspension damage.
Shane Macdonald was
now up to 8th behind Johnno Collins. Todd Doyle was out in
front followed by Darryl Etherden and Gavin Fletcher. The
green lights come back on, and another few laps there were cars
everywhere up the back straight, four cars were taken to the infield
with damage, including Darryn Brims, Mark Raymont, Gavin Fletcher
and Glen Pagel. Another restart got underway and Macdonald
made a move on the high line around Johnno Collins to grab 5th.
Macdonald then seemed to struggle all of a sudden falling back two
spots to 7th. Macdonald and Dale Grother then having a great
battle between the pair.
Aiden Raymont come to
a halt whilst running in 3rd which brought on the yellows.
Shane now sitting in 5th place, Grother and Macdonald continued
their battle swapping positions, until Grother slowed with a flat
right rear allowing Macdonald into 4th, but a freak accident saw a
piece of mud thrown up and hit the power line on the track shorting
out the lights after a shower of sparks. After waiting on the
track for over 30 minutes, the race was declared with 13 laps to go.
Todd Doyle won the event with Johnno Collins 2nd, Mark Ferguson 3rd,
Dale Grother 4th, Shane Macdonald 5th and Rodney Pammenter 6th.
Grother and Pammenter
both lucky to have been credited a finish as both had flat tyres at
that stage, but the race being declared went back to the previously
completed lap which then both cars were still running.
The official results
are pending an outcome from the Australian Title as Todd Doyle
received a ban for 12 months for allegedly using illegal fuel at the
Australian Title. Doyle has appealed the decision and was
allowed to race until the appeal is heard. If Doyle is found
guilty, he will be excluded from both the Australian Title results
and the Queensland Title, which would move Macdonald up to 4th.
