Shane
Macdonald searched for another good result at Kingaroy Speedway for
round four of the G&W Racing Modified Production Series, as he tries
to stay in the hunt in the point score as he currently sits in 4th
spot.
Rain had threatened
the event in the morning but the skies soon cleared up and gave the
track a chance to dry out.
Macdonald lined up in
position three for the first heat, as he settled into third place
searching for a way around Steve Collins. Shane moved up on
the track looking for a way past, but Macdonald got caught out up
high in the loose dirt and quickly fell back to 8th in one lap.
Gaining some composure and more patience, Macdonald bided his time
and went around Steven Zahl and Gary Maroske up the back straight to
snare 6th place across the line.
Starting out of
fourth place in heat two, Macdonald found a way past Dennis Bullpitt
to grab third place and held on to finish behind Aiden Raymont and
Darryl Etherden.
The last heat come
around and the last chance to grab some points for a good qualifying
spot for the 35 lap final. Macdonald started on the third row
beside Dennis Bullpitt, and soon settled into sixth once the race
got underway. A fiercely contested heat saw cars dicing and
weaving, and sometimes three-wide. Macdonald was right in on
the action, and unfortunately was the first casualty with a flat
left rear tyre, forcing him onto the infield to retire.
Qualifying from
position 15 on the grid, Macdonald knew it was going to be tough
going on a track with limited passing opportunities, but
perseverance and some swift driving is the key to unlocking the
door. Macdonald swapped positions with Dennis Bullpitt for
several laps, until advancing ahead of Bullpitt who later retired
with an engine miss. Shane then went to go around Travis
Barron who slowing with an ailing exhaust system. Macdonald looked
like he would lose out again like the heat before as Mark Ferguson
poked his nose back up the inside. Shane Macdonald never gave
in and made it stick going around Barron to clinch 9th place.
Macdonald pressed on
and started to bridge the gap between Gavin Fletcher and himself,
but the ground he made up was slowly slipping away as Shane had a
right hand rear tyre that was slowly deflating. A few more
laps and there was nothing left of it. With only a few laps
shy of the chequered flag, Shane rolled around and was credited with
10th place.
A solid nights racing
may see Shane advance to 4th place in the 2007/2008 series.
The next meeting will
be at Gympie Speedway on the 15th December for the T-Mac Auto Spares
Challenge.
