Promising
first night for Macdonald at "Rocky"
Saturday
January 27, 2007
Shane
Macdonald arrived at the Rockhampton showground complex with several
showers passing over the city during the day, but the skies started
to clear up come race time. Being a granite based track it can take
a lot of water before you cannot race on it. There was a light
drizzle all night, the first few races were a really greasy track
but it come good later in the night. This was Shane's first ever
appearance at the venue but was eagerly awaiting the challenge.
Heat 1 saw Shane start from position 7. The first few laps
Macdonald held his position, finding what line he felt comfortable
in. The last few laps Macdonald caught up to 6th place but couldn't
advance any further and finished in 7th.
As
Macdonald drove off the track he felt a slight vibration in the
tailshaft. Back in the pits the crew checked it out and found the
tailshaft c-v joint starting bind or sieze up. We were able to
re-pack it with grease to get him through the night. Unfortunately
we just missed the next heat by minutes. The final heat of the
night saw Shane start from third place. Macdonald settled into 3rd
behind Dale Grother. Coming out of turn two Dale Grother got
sideways in front of Macdonald. The racing was that close Macdonald
had little time to do anything and spun Grother. Craig Mellor and
Graham Bing then had nowhere to go and collided with Grother, which
resulted in Grother and Bing forced out with damage. Gavin Fletcher
also pulled out after leading the race. This left Macdonald out in
front. Shane drove away with the heat win with Craig Mellor not far
behind until Mellor spun. Aiden Raymont finished in 2nd.
The
tailshaft has been removed and are currently chasing up another c-v
joint for the car. Macdonald is hoping for a good run tonight to
get a good start in the A-main feature race.
