Oh so close!

The hotly contested Queensland Title was run at Carina Speedway, Bundaberg on the weekend, with over 40 cars competing.  The original date was rained out so it was moved to the 24th June.  There were forecasts of rain once again but it held off for the whole meeting to be run.  Shane had 4 heats to get through as well as a 40 lap final.

The first heat Macdonald started from position 3.  The race was riddled with restarts.  Macdonald did drop back to sixth place until a total restart was called, and another time he was able to get into the lead until another restart was called.  Once the race got underway Shane was running 3rd for most of the race until he made a move past Gavin Fletcher into 2nd.  Macdonald held off a late challenge from John Swarbrooke to finish 2nd.

Heat 2 saw Shane start from outside pole.  He was able to lead for most of the race when former QLD champ Jonno Collins started tapping at Macdonald's door.  Both cars swapped positions for several laps.  Macdonald was right on the tail of the leader on the last lap but had to settle for 2nd.

For the third heat Macdonald started from 9th place.  Macdonald knew he had to put in a good performance to get a box seat for the A-main.  Macdonald displayed an aggressive but clean attack of driving, steering his commodore around the outside of several cars.  The track surface was holding up real well with plenty of moisture.  Macdonald moved his way into 4th place which is where he finished heat 3.

The final heat for the night found Macdonald off the outside front row.  Macdonald threw his car straight into the lead and led the heat from start to finish.

The feature race grid positions were announced as Todd Doyle dominated his heats to be the man on pole, with Wayne Miles out of 2 and Dale Grother out of 3.  Macdonald found himself out of position 4.  The 40 lap main event was going to be tough.  As the green flag waved and the field got settled down, Macdonald struggled early on to find a groove, dropping back to 6th or 7th place at one stage.  Shane put in another gutsy drive to charge back through the pack, as he passed 2 cars in one corner and around the outside of another.  Shane moved his way back up to 4th place when one of the Raymont boys put his car in the wall whilst running 2nd bringing on the yellows.  The race got underway again which then saw an awesome display of racing between Macdonald and Wayne Miles in his BA Ford Falcon.  The two cars swapped positions on several occasions.  With 5 laps to go there was another stoppage.  Macdonald restarted in 2nd place behind lleader Todd Doyle.  As the cars took off, Macdonald seemed to be slowing dropping back through the field, the crowd realising something was wrong.  Shane was devastated as his left hand rear axle had snapped.  Macdonald was forced onto the infield and did not finish the race.

Shane was devastated being so close to having a podium position in his first ever state title in Modified Production.  Shane's commodore was well suited the track and track conditions and drove superbly all night.  At the same time Macdonald was happy to be running up the front in such a quality field of drivers.

Shane will now have a short break before the commencement of the new season.  He would also like to thank all his sponsors, especially Steve and Marion from Dorrs Engineering for the tremendous effort they have put into the car to get it going, as well as Linmac Automotive for providing everything we need.

Bring on the new season!
