Shane
Macdonald competed in the final round of the Hydraulic Drilling
Services held at Mothar Mountain Speedway, Gympie on Saturday
Night. Macdonald never having raced at the venue and never even
seen it before, he was optimistic how he would fare. The tracks
unique shape was very interesting, as it is placed on the side of
two hills and is in a "kidney" shape.
Heat 1
Shane started on the outside front row, and was beaten off the
start, Macdonald settled into 3rd place. Macdonald was then under
siege from Local Todd Doyle, but Shane held his position until
running wide in turn 1 and letting Doyle through. Shane finished
4th and was happy with the car and the track after his first race.
Macdonald started from 4th in heat 2. Shane slipped back into 5th
place during the heat and pressed on to finish right behind 4th
placing.
Starting
from 10th in heat 3, Macdonald diced all race with Travis Barron,
swapping positions several times. Shane struggled with set-up to
get around the bottom hair-pin corner pushing wide several times.
Shane ended up finishing 10th.
Shane
qualified from 14th position in the 30 lap final out of a total of
30 cars. The key was going to be to stay out of trouble and press
on hard, which Macdonald already knew. As the field got away, Greg
Raymont spun in the first corner as cars went everywhere to avoid
it, Shane had to stop grinding to a halt just behind Raymont and
luckily never hit him, but then got shunted in the left rear wheel
from another car. The Macdonald Racing team held their breath, but
Shane unfortunately pulled on the infield with a flat tyre. A
disappointing end to what could have been a good race.
Todd
Doyle won the closely contested feature race from Aidan Raymont and
Glenn Pagel 3rd.
Darran
Shearn just had to finish the final to win the Hydraulic Drilling
Services series, and was lucky to do so after breaking a drive shaft
half way through the race. Shearn managed to finish and win the
series overall.
